Maritime Museum
Have you helped your Museum today? Made a donation for the collection, helped on a a committee, placed the Museum in your will, visited, offered your services, worked on an exhibit?

Exhibits: A new display focusing on navigation has been set up to show the tools a Captain might have as he is operating a boat. Artifacts include a chart, compass, sextant, knotmaster, ships wheel and engine room telegraph. Another new display features Almardon, a Lee Hickock built cabin boat used by Freeman Horton in his engineering work for the Sunshine Bridge. The commercial fishing section in the main gallery has been expanded to include a more extensive long line and the Bandit boat fishing section reflecting the current controversy. The museum store has been redone with more space for books and tee-shirts. New plants have been put in the Surprise Garden along with a general clean up of that area.

Volunteers: Museum and Boat Shop Volunteers NEEDED.
Both Bob Pitt and Ted Adams need good volunteers. Neither one of our facilities can operate without a core group of people willing to help. We provide all the training, and you get the satisfaction of being involved in a great Community undertaking. Boat Shop volunteers usually work Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You do not have to work all three days. Museum volunteers are asked to work one shift a week for three hours. Volunteers are signed up for the RSVP Program and are covered by their insurance while on duty. For information on volunteering call:

Boat Shop Update
Bob Pitt was recently in Erie, PA where her took the Esparanza for a month long showing at the Bay Center for Maritime Studies. Afterwards, the boat will travel to the  Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for a show before coming back to Cortez. Boat Shop Volunteers and Bob are working on a Spanish Long Boat re-creation for the DeSoto National Park. It has been planked and is now off the building mold. The 18” Perrson Skiff is being finished in time to debut at the Mid Atlantic Small Craft Festival where it is hoped she will be a winner. Surf Boat #2 for the Jacksonville Beach Red Cross Amateur Life Saving Association is being framed up.

We’re Growing
At a special meeting the FISH Board of Directors moved to purchase the Cortez Church of God property between 123rd St. Court West and 124th St. West. The decision was made based on concerns that the Parsonage and the Church itself, both of which are on the National Registry, might be destroyed to make way for a larger residence that would be inappropriate for the Village. Additional parking for functions at the Community Center/FISH Boatworks becomes available with the large grassy lot that is included with the purchase. The Church is seen as a valuable asset for programs of all sorts. The Parsonage will continue as a rental property to help pay for the $245,009 mortgage. Manatee River Community Bank is generously providing the loan.
Burton Store Update
The Burton Store exterior is about 99% complete. Volunteer Bob Landry and crew have just applied the last coat of paint on newly installed shutters. Simply Green Solutions, an environmental consulting firm, has partnered with FISH to come up with a plan for Platinum level of “green” technology to provide water, heat, light and air conditioning utilities for the multi-use facility. Architect Thomas Denslow, and Energy and Sustainability Consultants (ESC) have joined the power house team on this project also.
The FISH Preserve Update
Two grant applications have been submitted for the ongoing habitat restoration. Both are Federal grants, one through US Fish & Wildlife, and one through National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The NOAA grant will continue restoration to the southeastern corner of the Preserve but includes a topographic survey of the entire 100 acres. The US Fish and Wildlife Service grant, if funded, will be used to produce a comprehensive restoration plan that can be used to seek funding to complete work on the entire site. That grant includes funding to seek the many permits required for work around the water so that work can continue as funding becomes available. Other grants are in the works.
